CAREER
Mr. Mello earned a B. S. in Electrical Engineering, cum laude, from the University of Massachusetts and a J.D., cum laude, from Suffolk University Law School. He is a member of the Massachusetts Bar Association, American Intellectual Property Law Association, Boston Patent Law Association, Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE), and Eta Kappa Nu. Mr. Mello was also recognized as a Massachusetts Super Lawyers Rising Star in Boston Magazine in 2005 and 2006, and was formerly a partner at the law firm of McDermott, Will & Emery LLP.
Mr. Mello has over 10 years of engineering and engineering management experience with the U.S. Air Force in a wide range of technical fields. He worked on software intensive communications, database, command and control and radar systems, as well as video teleconferencing and microwave landing systems. Mr. Mello also chaired working groups on systems integration, interface control and communications, and software development. He won the Air Force Notable Achievement for leading a team in the evaluation of the software development capabilities of bidders in government defense contracts.
Since entering the intellectual property law field in 1996, Mr. Mello has acquired a wealth of experience in the prosecution of patents and trademarks within the United States and abroad. For example, he has prosecuted patents in the fields of business methods, communications, computer programs, network-based applications, control systems, graphical user interfaces, semiconductors, fiber optics, and medical devices, as well as other electrical and mechanical systems. He also has significant experience in preparing and negotiating technology-based agreements, such as license, software development, and outsourcing agreements. Mr. Mello has also prepared patent validity and infringement opinions and participated in intellectual property due diligence for mergers, acquisitions, and financing events.
